Classroom Requirements
Supplies:
Bring a pencil or pen. Textbooks will be loaned. If the books are not cared for, a $37 replacement fee will be charged.
Cost:
The complete course is $400.00 or $350.00 (if you bring three friends who register) and absolutely no refunds will be given. Each slot is reserved for the duration of the 6 week course.
Dress Code:
Students are required to wear appropriate clothing during class and especially during the Behind the Wheel segment. Under garments must be worn at all times. Hats, sun glasses, swim wear, wet clothing, or clothing associated with gang identification, mini skirts, shorts and low cut blouses are considered inappropriate. Students dressed inappropriately will be sent home to change and the portion of the class missed will need to be made up at the end of the session.
Attendance:
In-class attendance for at least 30 hours is required by law to complete this class. No missing class; in the event of an emergency, a class can be made up at the end of the session. If more than two classes are missed, the student will be dropped from the course. On the second make-up lesson, a $25 fee will be assessed.
Parents or Guardians:
Parents shall be provided information on how long to remain calm, give commands, keep the car in control, and provide positive feedback when conducting behind the wheel training with their teens. Parents will be provided in-car support materials defining what to focus on and when to practice it (if doing the BTW with us). Parents must set up driving homework for 3 1/2 hours each week for their youth. Parents agree to enforce classroom rules, if violated.
Course Material:
The course will cover Hawaii traffic laws and their liabilities as drivers. Instruction on driving responsibilities; signs, signals and roadway markings; basic car control; making safe driving decisions; controlling the vehicle; basic car maneuvers; negotiating intersections; sharing the roadway; driving in different environments and situations; driving in urban areas, rural areas and high speed highways or freeways; adverse conditions; emergencies; being a responsible driver; effects of driver condition on risk taking; alcohol and other drugs; and defense driving strategies will all be covered.
Behind-the-Wheel in Car Instruction:
The student curricula shall contain, as a minimum, instruction in the following skills:
Introduction to driving - pre-start, starting the engine, putting the vehicle in motion, stopping, turns; Basic maneuvers including lane control, lateral maneuver - move into traffic, backing straight, backing left and right, lane changing; Residential driving three-three point turnabout, U-turns, scanning skills, blind spots; Rural driving - following distance, passing; City driving - angle parking, perpendicular parking, uphill and downhill parking; and Freeway and highway driving - merging, exiting, lane changing, following distance. This 6 hour course is not included in the $170 classroom fee. Checks can be written to Lawrence Sanchez, your DOT instructor. No refunds will be given for any reason.
